Sensibility and Reform

(p.188) Chapter 7 Sensibility and Reform
Abigail and John Adams
University of Chicago Press

This chapter, which focuses on Abigail Adams' March 31, 1776 letter to John Adams titled “Remember the Ladies,” suggests that this letter is Abigail's continuing wish for more sensibility from John. It also argues that the letter can be interpreted as an expression of the call for the reformation of men's manners that had existed for a century on both sides of the Atlantic, Americanizing it in the revolutionary context. The chapter furthermore contends that Abigail's potential feminism was inflected by the culture of sensibility.

Keywords:   Abigail Adams, Remember the Ladies, men's manners, feminism, culture of sensibility
