This chapter, which discusses the decline in the prestige of Abraham Lincoln after World War II and the Korean War in the 1950s, explains that this period was marked by the expanding role of science and technology, increased wealth, an enlarged role of the mass media, meritocracy, and a widening role of women in the labor force. All these developments were made possible by the erosion of traditional authority structures exemplified by Lincoln.
