This chapter discusses the image of Abraham Lincoln during the Cold War. The postwar Rights and Justice Generation treated its national traditions and heroes respectfully and Lincoln was still the man he had always been but with less fervor than before. The people of this generation started to question whether Lincoln was as determined to free the slaves as he was to restore national unity, and how these issues bear on the problems of racial integration and civil rights.
